Dear friends and Colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to (finally) welcome you to Egmond aan Zee, a village on the North Sea coast in the Dutch province of North-Holland, to celebrate the 42nd IPPA Hybrid Advanced Course in Paediatric Pathology. The meeting will be held from 7-13th of May, 2022, in Hotel Zuiderduin. For those who cannot attend in person due to travel restrictions, we will be streaming and recording the presentations. More information will follow.
Egmond is formed by three separate municipalities that merged in 1978; Egmond-Binnen, Egmond aan den Hoef and Egmond aan Zee. Around the year 950 count Dirk I founded a convent at the edge of the dunes and in the year 977 the village of Egmond aan Zee was formed. Settlers in this area have battled the sea since the first settlements. During the All Saints' Flood of 1570, some 50 houses disappeared into the sea. And in November 1741, the sea swallowed 36 houses, the church, and its tower. The sea also provided the people of Egmond food and work, as most inhabitants of Egmond were fishermen. Egmond aan Zee has been a popular seaside resort since the beginning of the 20th century, when it was well known for its healthy and clear sea air. Children came over to stay in one of the many "koloniehuizen" (colony houses), which were sanatorium-like institutions often run by charities and churches.
The IPPA course will be held in Hotel Zuiderduin, located in the dunes at a distance of only 100 meters from the beach. The hotel has numerous facilities, including a swimming pool, bowling alley, a fitness area and a bar. From Schiphol Airport, hotel Zuiderduin can be reached by taxi (approximately 45-60 min) or by public transport, which is safe and well organized in the Netherlands. With public transportation it takes approximately 90-100 minutes to get to hotel Zuiderduin. A detailed description of the public transportation route from Schiphol to Egmond will follow.
The academic programme is being prepared and it will cover topics in foetal, perinatal, placental and paediatric pathology. Participants from more than 20 countries are expected to attend.
We have planned three social activities. Because of constantly changing COVID restrictions the exact program details will be definitive just before start of the course.
The temperature around this time of the year will be around 15°C, although it can be unpredictable. As Holland can be rainy bring a coat!
The gala dinner will take place at the beach, at walking distance from the hotel (5 minutes), in Nautilus aan Zee. This is a beach pavilion that was rebuilt a few years back and restyled and is open all year round.
I hope that you will enjoy the course and that your interaction with your colleagues from many different countries will stimulate a creative exchange of ideas and will be personally rewarding.
Information on COVID restrictions in Holland can be found on the website from the Dutch government; www.government.nl
Looking forward to receiving you at the Dutch coast!
Yours,
Dr. P. Bode, Course Director
